The Basic History of Bablyon 5 A hundred years ago, humanity made contact with its first alien civilization: the Centauri. Before the arrival of the Centauri, we were confined to a very small amount of space. We used sleeper ships, ships with cyrogenic chambers, to explore the universe. The Centauri offered us the use of their jumpgates and later, taught us how to build our own. In exchange for this and other technologies, they asked only for trinkets which they could sell back home. In the next eighty years that followed humanity expanded outward at a rapid pace. Earth played the role of the superhero; when a less powerful alien civilazation was attacked, Earth aided them, establishing its role as a major galactic power. Then, humanity made contact with a race named the Minbari. The Earth-Minbari War began with a misunderstanding. A Minbari fleet aproached a human force with its gun ports open, a sign of respect for the Minbari. The humans, however, took this as a sign of aggression and fired upon the Minbari, resulting in the death of the Minbari religious and political leader, Dutkat. To the Minbari, what followed was a jihad, vengeance for the murder of their leader. Earth was outmatched both in technology and forces. The Minbari easily beat us back to our home planet. Then, as their ships closed in on Earth and wiped out our last defences, the Minbari halted their advance and surrendered without an explanation. Only a few people knew why. The Babylon Project was conceived in the aftermath of the war. Modeled after the United Nations, it would be a meeting place, neutral ground where the powers could meet and work out their differences peacefully. The first three Babylon stations were sabotaged in mid-construction. The fourth was the biggest and most expensive station. But just as it went online, it vanished without a trace. The fifth sation was built mainly with the finantial support of the Minbari and Centauri who saw the advantages in such a station. Babylon 5 is the story of the last of the Babylon stations, the last hope for a galaxy without war. Babylon 5 begins in the year 2257 with the opening of the Babylon 5 station. |
